Bristow: union suspends action as Labour Ministry intervenes

After shutting down operations at the premises of Bristow helicopters in Lagos on Thursday over alleged pay disparity, the  National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers (NAAPE), suspended its actions after the Ministry of Laboured waded in.

Bristow acknowledged that the action on Thursday, ‘caused disruptions to our clients’ flight operations in Nigeria’.

“The action is related to concerns raised by NAAPE regarding certain aspects of the conditions of service of its members currently employed by Bristow Helicopters Nigeria. Bristow has been in dialogue with NAAPE over the past few months regarding this matter and a proposal was recently put to NAAPE for their consideration.

“The Federal Ministry of Labour has intervened in the matter and had advised the union to stop its action and maintain the status quo until a meeting scheduled for April.

“This action is coming at a time when the global oil and gas industry is facing severe challenges and the Nigerian economy is undergoing serious disruptions with a number of clients reducing their activities. Bristow continues to keep its obligations to clients and employees”, the company said in a statement.

It however expressed disappointment “that despite our concerted efforts to keep our Nigeria operations running as smoothly and efficiently as possible, this action will temporarily impact flight schedules.

“We will continue to encourage dialogue and partnership with all stakeholders during this period. We restate our commitment to providing safe and efficient air services to our clients and to the development of the Nigerian aviation industry”, it added.

NAAPE had threaten to go on strike from 2400hrs of Wednesday, March 30 to 2400hrs on Friday April 1, 2016 over ‘the issue of pay disparity by which Nigerian Pilots and Engineers were discriminated against in favour of foreign nationals, as well as the highly inimical absence of a valid conditions of service.
