Following the outcry on Tuesday by members of Airline Operators of Nigerian (AON) that there was no evidence of work at the Murtala Muhammed Airport since the Runway 18L was closed for one week for installation of lights, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has provided evidence and report of progress of work on the site.
According to the details given by Mrs. Faithful Hope-Ivbaze, spokesperson for the Authority, work commenced on July 8, 2022 with mobilization of equipment and workers.
On July 9, 2022, the portion of the Runway closed to traffic was condoned off with safety barriers with obstacle Light. Marking of the RWY centreline light also commenced and 240m marking from the threshold 18L was done.
Digging of cable trenches from the switch room 18L to Approach commenced same day.
The following day, marking of the touchdown zone light and runway centerline light continue and up to 410m from 18L was done . Digging of cable trenches continued.
On July 11, 2022, digging of cable trenches and marking of centreline and touchdown light continued.
on the 13th of same month, marking of the TDZ and RWY centreline light progressed to 840m. with cutting of links to transformer pit commenced, fabrication of cable rollers also commenced.
On July 14, marking of TDZ light completed while that of RWY centreline light continued.
Digging of cable trenches were completed at Approach area and continues from there to C1 holding position. Cutting of the pavement for insert of fittings also commenced.
On July 15, 2022, the marking of runway Centreline, digging of cable trenches at 18L and 36R and cutting of pavement for the inset fittings continued.
On July 16, 2022, marking of runway Centreline completed; Digging of cable trenches at approach 18L and from the left side of the Runway and taxiway C completed but cutting of pavement for the inset fittings continued while fixing of fittings on the pavement with the elevated fittings to 30m prior to the threshold commenced.
She disclosed that ‘the heavy downpour rain of last week affected the progress but work is progressing well’.
FAAN, AON Team and 18L AGL project Engr inspecting work on Wednesday
On Wednesday, Hope-Ivbaze disclosed that a team of inspection led by Mr. Ameachi, the engineer electrical at Runway 36R via C7 were on site, adding that ‘the Runway light installation work is in progress. All the Airlines at both terminals of DT1 and MM2 were on ground as well as all the Agencies concerned. The FAAN Team, AON and the 18L AGL project Engr. inspected the work on Runway 18L on 20th July 2022’.
