There is an uneasy calm at the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET) as two top management staff are said to have engaged in a physical brawl within the premises of the Agency.
A source close to the Agency said apart from the issue of alleged employment of ‘unapproved and unqualified personnel’, which he said was fuelling crisis, he disclosed that the Senior Special Assistant to the Director-General on Technical Matters, Mr. Dan Okafor, who is also the General Manager, Hydromet, NiMET, on Thursday at the NiMET office engaged in physical fight with the Director of Applied Services, Mal. Mailadi Yusuf.
It was gathered that the fisticuffs, which was allegedly initiated by Okafor started when he (Okafor) accused the Director of unilateral decision making and his non-inclusion in critical operations of the agency.
On the other hand, Mailadi accused Okafor of bullying, intimidating and violating civil service rules with his conducts.
The source alleged that ‘Okafor who was engaged in NiMET as a Level 17 officer had no experience of meteorology before he was deployed to the agency.
The source added: “This man high handedness has over-reached a climax, he has been molesting women, intimidating staff in all facets. This man constantly violates civil service rules by actions and appointment.
“Just last Thursday last week, Mr. Dan Okafor had physical fight with the Director of Applied Services, Mal. Mailadi Yusuf, which turned into violation of code of conduct in the civil services.
“Several reports have been made to the high echelon of unions to actually deal with this travesty. Since the emergence of the DG, the ineptitude of NiMET management has been a major concerned; this has resulted into major parody in civil service.”
A union leader in the industry who didn’t want his name in print, called on Sirika to as a matter of urgency to expunge the unqualified and irresponsible staff out of the service in a bid to have a responsible civil service in the sector.
Meanwhile, Mr. Muntari Ibrahim, the General Manager, Public Affairs, NiMET, is yet to respond to this as he did not pick all calls put through to him, he has also not responded to text and Whatsapp messages sent to him as at the time of filling this report.
